Honored Veteran, Celebrated Fire Chief, Loving Father and Friend
Sheridan, OR [August 6th 2016]: Larry Eckhardt, honored veteran, celebrated Fire Chief, Loving Husband and Father, passed away Saturday August 6th. He will be greatly missed by his family and the people his life touched through his service to his country and the communities he has served.
Larry was born May 1947 in Pittsburg Kansas to Ruth and Gerald Eckhardt. He spent his youth in Banks, Oregon and after graduating (1965) he married Sherrie Shafer (1967). They had three amazing children: Todd, Charise and Levi (Craig). Later he married his current wife, Pat. Pat followed Larry across the United states and through all the moves to be various department’s Fire Chiefs.
Larry has led a life of service to others. He served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1968 and was awarded many awards including a Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and Army Accommodation Medal. After serving in the military Larry was called on to serve his community as a Firefighter. He began his career with Tri-City RFPD (Banks, OR) in 1969. In 1980 he went to work for Washington County Fire District #2 (North plains, OR). In 1985 he was selected as the Fire Chief of Sheridan Fire District and stayed until 1991. Chief Eckhardt took a position as Hoodland’s Fire Chief in 1991 and then returned to Sheridan in 2002. During his time with Sheridan Fire District Chief Eckhardt, both times, has done many good things for the district and the community and mentored many Firefighters across the state and the nation.
Larry loved being a part of the communities where he served. He was a lifetime member of the VFW & The American Legion. He also enjoyed going to watch his Grandchildren play sports and was very proud of each of his children’s accomplishments. He loved his family dearly, loved his life and was a blessing to all that knew him.
August 8th 2016 --Larry’s Family will be having a Rosary at 4 PM at Macy’s Funeral Parlor in McMInnvile Oregon. 135 NE Evans St. Following that will be a public viewing until 7PM.
August 9th 2016 –Chief Eckhardt’s funeral service will be 11 AM at St James Catholic Church. 1145 NE 1st St McMinnville, Oregon.
Following the service there will be a funeral procession (route to be announced) ending at Macy’s Funeral Parlor.
The Internment will be at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery, more information will provided as available.
